How To Save For Your Honeymoon & Places You Could Visit

Thailand

When it comes to the honeymoon, budget is a big factor, but you can still have a great honeymoon no matter the size of your budget.

Whether you choose to honeymoon in the UK, Europe or further away, there are lots of options available for all budgets and tastes.

UK

UK Honeymoon

If you’re looking to stay in the UK to do a bit of sightseeing as well as relaxing, then why not head to a city such as London or Edinburgh.

UK cities are normally full of culture, and if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, you’re sure to find a spa to relax in nearby.

If the countryside is more your style, then you’re definitely not in short supply, with many National Parks to choose from, and areas, such as Norfolk, that also boast some pretty beaches.

If you’d like a mix of both, then again you have options, one of them being the Gower Peninsula in South Wales. Voted as an area of outstanding natural beauty, the Gower Peninsula has countryside, several beautiful beaches and is close to the cities of Swansea and South Wales.

If heading to the beach is more your thing, then head down to Cornwall and surf the waves.

Europe

Greece

If you’re looking for a slightly warmer climate, then Europe is full of potential honeymoon destinations, and it definitely has something for everyone. From cities full of culture, to sunny beaches, casinos and activities, like diving. Here are a few destinations for inspiration:

  • Paris  – full of culture and is, of course, the city of romance

  • Rome – a lot of sightseeing opportunities can be found in Rome, with lots of history to keep you busy for days. Plus, it’s only a short Metro ride away from the nearest beach

  • The French Rivera – the Mediterranean coastline that includes places such as Nice and Monaco, where you can be guaranteed a honeymoon of luxury with beautiful beaches, food and nightlife to keep you entertained

  • Sicily – the largest island in the Med, just off the coast of Italy. Sicily is for sure a picturesque island, offering you pure relaxation and the chance to escape the rat race.

  • Reykjavik – for something a little more unique why not head to Iceland and explore the capital. Check out the natural hot springs that can be found not too far away, or opt for an Iceland tour where you can be taken to the most beautiful sights in Iceland. Depending on the time of year, you may even be lucky enough to witness the Northern Lights

  • Venice – the city on water. Expect romance, gelato, Gondola rides and a wealth of beautiful Italian food. Why not visit some of the famous movie spots whilst you're there too?!

  • The Greek Islands – from Kos to Rhodes, to Crete to Santorini, the Greek Islands offer something for everyone. You can expect boat trips in the crystal clear waters, exploring quaint towns in Mykonos or chilling on the beaches taking in the glorious sunshine

  • The Balearic Islands  a Spanish Island group that includes Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza. This is a great option for those of you who like a little bit of everything. Nightlife, beautiful beaches and crystal clear seas, sunshine, beautiful food and even architecture and beautiful city vibes

  • Malta and Gozo – great for culture, sun and activities, such as scuba diving

Further Away

Machu Pichu

If you fancy doing something a little further from home, then the Caribbean and Indian Ocean are great places to start. With 4 and 5 star hotels geared up for honeymooners, you're bound to find something that will take your fancy.

Although the honeymoon might not be your top priority at the moment, or maybe it is, it's worth thinking about early, as this will give you the chance to save for discounts.

What do we mean by this?

Virgin Atlantic

Loyalty clubs, such as Tesco Clubcard and Nectar, give you the chance to exchange your points for other things - one of the options being travel.

Tesco, for example, allow you to exchange points for flying miles through Avios (which can be used to purchase or get a discount on British Airways and Iberia flights) and also through the Virgin Flying club. This is perfect if you're already planning on flying with them, or if it works out cheaper than the airline you were thinking of flying with.

You can also exchange points for certain hotels, cottages, boats, cruises and holiday operators, so we would say that it's definitely worth looking into.

If you’re a frequent flyer, then you should also look into signing up for the airlines’ frequent flyer club. For British Airways, this is The BA Executive Club and for Virgin this is The Virgin Flying Club.

You could use your honeymoon as an excuse to splurge on a trip of a lifetime. Do you have a travel wish list or bucket list? Perhaps you have always dreamt of visiting each one of the modern day seven wonders of the world? You don’t have to follow suit in order to have a great honeymoon - think outside the box on places you can visit.

All it takes is a little organisation, preparation and planning. Give yourself time to save for the honeymoon of your dreams if you have not included this within your wedding budget. You don’t have to go off on your honeymoon immediately after the wedding. In fact, it is becoming more and more popular now for couples to take ‘mini-moons’ directly after the wedding, whilst saving for a dream trip.
